Department of Physics
  • Introduction
    The Department of Physics was established as a Major Department in the year 1986 at the B.Sc. Degree level, upgraded as a PG department from the academic year 2013-’14 and elevated as a Research department offering Ph.D. Programme from the academic year 2021-’22 onwards. The department is one among 4 Science departments recognized by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under DBT Star status Scheme, Department of Science and Technology under FIST (zero level) and DST CURIE project scheme. Both UG & PG curriculum provides an integrated and unified approach covering various branches of Physics with Choice Based Credit System and Outcome Based Education. The department has state of art laboratory to carry regular practical experiment and research level experiments.

    Graduates of B.Sc. Physics after 4 years of their graduation will

  • Highlights of the Department
      Funded under
    • DST-FIST (Level 0) for equipments worth Rs.13,00,000/-
    • DBT- Star College Status from the academic year 2022-’23 onwards with onetime non-recurring fund of Rs. 15,00,000/- and recurring fund of Rs.5,00,000/- every year.
    • DST- CURIE project scheme worth of Rs. 1.5 Crores
    • Instrumentation facilities: FTIR, Muffle furnace, Planetary Ball Mill, Spin coating unit, Centrifuge, Hall effect apparatus, Four Probe, Pelletier are available in the laboratory to carry out group projects / Projects / Research.
    • Thrust areas of Research: Nano materials, Magnetic materials, Thin films. UG and PG Students attend Summer Internships / Summer Research Fellowship / PTTS Programmes hosted by Institutions such as IASC Bangalore, IISER Mohali, TIFR, CECRI Karaikudi, Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education and Research, Mumbai, Bharathiar University, Gandhigram University, Madras University, IGCAR- Kalpakkam, ARCI Hyderabad etc.
    • Faculty members published research articles in the peer reviewed journals.
    • Industry Linkages: UG Students undergo Industry-Academia Internship in the NABL Certified Institutions, entering into MoU with Industries such as SiTARC, ROOTS, MAS Solar Systems promoting the NSQF level certification for providing training/ Knowledge sharing/ fetching employment on mutually understandable themes.
    • National Level Skill Test: Every year students take-up National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE), National Anveshika Experimental Skill Test (NAEST) conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) and attend On-line courses like NPTEL in SWAYAM portal.
    • Experiential Learning: Industrial visits to places such as ISRO centers at Bangalore and Trivandrum, Radio Astronomy centre, Ooty, TN, Science and Engineering Museum, Planetarium at various places, Raman Research Institute, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Kodaikanal.
      • Physics Meet:
    • Conducting National Seminars/Workshops/ Conferences on Current developments in Physics such as Advanced Nano materials, Lasers, Solar PV technology etc.
    • Aiding the students for participating and presenting their research findings in the conferences and encouraging them to participate in the Inter-collegiate events conducted by other institutions.
    • Maintaining strong Alumnae record in the Research Institutions in India and Abroad and also in the IT-Sector.
    • Science Popularization Programmes: To enhance science temperament among the young children
    • Department periodically organizes seminars, workshops, conferences and intercollegiate competitions and motivates the student to take up the research activities.
    • The department is organizing Science programmes for school children every year by way of conducting Science exhibition, Science experiments demonstrations, Science Awareness programmes on celestial events as an Outreach activity
    • National Science Day is celebrated every year apart from the days of scientific importance.
