Department of Botany

Introduction

Botany is important primarily because it is the scientific study of plants, which are in turn used in many aspects of human life. In the spectrum of life, plants and animals seem to be entirely different entities. While the organisms they study and many of their methods are different, these two sciences share many parallels with each other and with other biological sciences. Botany includes a wide range of scientific sub disciplines that study the structure, growth, reproduction, development, diseases, ecology and evolution of plants. The study of plants is important because they are a fundamental part of life on Earth, generating food, oxygen, fuel, medicine and fibers that allow other life forms to exist. Through photosynthesis they absorb carbon dioxide, a waste product generated by most animals and a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. The Allied course and Elective courses paper offered by the department are aimed at creating awareness on eco sensitive issues and preparing students to be entrepreneurs. The Department has created and maintains a Herbal Garden on the College campus.
Programme Educational Objeactives:(PEO)

PEO 1:To produce B.Sc. graduates in Zoology by providing quality education in Allied Botany with specialization in the area of Plant Kingdom
PEO 2:To motivate the student in self-employment through bio-fertilizer preparation.
PEO 3:‘Earn while learn’ can be done with the acquirement of basic knowledge in growing medicinal plants.
PEO 4: To motivate and promote knowledge in nutritive value of food to maintain ‘Health Care Problems’.
PEO 5:To expose the recent trends in Botany, participating in Seminars, Conferences, and guest lectures and field visits.
