The Department was established in 1954 and was upgraded as Post Graduate department in 1980 and as a Research department in 2003. It is one of the oldest department with marvelous achievements. The expansion as Post Graduate and Research Department is the outcome of the commendable services rendered by the past faculty. The present faculty sincerely works for the overall development of the students. The Curriculum for U.G. and P.G. courses are designed in such a way that it would foster the knowledge and skills of the student and would help them to meet the global issues. The syllabi of national and regional History have been updated till date to equip the students to appear for Competitive Examinations.

Certificate Course on “Aviation – Travel & Tourism” was offered for the final UG students of History, Ecoomics, & Literarure during the academic year 2013-14.
The Department of History was sanctioned an amount of RS.2, 35,000 to conduct ‘Foundation Course on Human Rights Education’ for five years from the academic year 2011-12.
Ret. Professor Dr. (Mrs).K.C.K.Rajabhavanavathy was sanctioned an amount of Rs: 4,98,700 by UGC for her Major Research project entitled on “A Historical perspective of the study of Dalits in Udumalpet Region in accordance with Dr.Ambedkar’s Vision” . The project was completed and submitted to UGC on 30.04.2011.
M.Phil Scholar S.Ananthi was awarded ICHR Study Grant of Rs.12,400 for the dissertation entitled “Development of Caste System in Medeival Kongu “, 2003-04
Ret. Professor Dr. J.Kasthuri published a textbook on “Modern Governments”,Ennes Publication , 1998.
Ret. Professor Mrs.U.Ramani was the first to hold the position of the Controller of the Examinations under Autonomy.
Ret. Professor Ms.Roselin George , Head , Department of History was the Principal of the College during the Academic year 1986-87.
The Department is enriched with the collection of reference books and research journals donated by renowned Historian Dr.N.S.Subramaniam .
