Department of Economics


The Department of Economics, one of the oldest departments in the college was established in 1956 and was later upgraded into Post Graduate and Research Department. The Mission and Vision of the Department is to develop knowledge and scholarship in Economics and enhance the employability of the stakeholders. The curriculum has been periodically updated to include current trends and contemporary issues in this field of knowledge. With the firm belief that education extends beyond the classroom, the department undertakes major and minor research projects and organizes workshops and seminars periodically.

An UGC sponsored Innovative Course, B.A. Economics with Logistics and Freight Management was introduced during 2012-2013 with the aim to enhance the employability of the students on one side as well as provide trained and equipped manpower in the emerging field of logistics and freight management on the other side to meet the requirements of national and global economy.


To develop logical and informed thinking on matters of general economic interest and impart the knowledge on recent trends in Economics.
To equip the students with managerial and entrepreneurial skills for self- employment and also computer skills for enhancing their employability.
To prepare the students to take-up master degree and research programmes.
To inculcate the ethical, moral and environmental values and
To develop attitude towards selfless services on national building activities.

The department is manned by ten experienced teaching staffs who are Doctorates.
So far 61 batches in UG and 30 batches of PG passed out of the department.
The department has been upgraded as a full-fledged research department since 2003-2004.
Faculty of the department takes up minor and major projects funded by UGC, ICSSR and Malcolm Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust, Chennai.
The department has the credit of organizing number of guest lectures, workshops, conferences and seminars at State/ National/ International with the sponsorship of UGC and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), New Delhi.
Faculty is motivated to publish research articles in reputed journals with impact factor.
The department offers a Certificate Course in Hindi certified by Department of Correspondence courses, Central Hindi Directorate, and Ministry of HRD.
Students are encouraged to participate in extra and co-curricular activities.
Efforts are taken to nurture the basic values of life among younger generation through curriculum and awareness programmes.
Curriculum has been updated based on the requirement of the industry and suggestions by subject experts.
